We are testing different kinds of soils to see which soil has the highest levels of beneficial fungi. From our results, we learned that the natural playa had the most fungus, 93% in a culture dish. The team believes this could be the result of a healthy, natural playa surrounded by a buffer zone. The plant buffers prevent pesticides and herbicides from entering the playa wetland. The harvested cotton field had the least amount of fungus, 40% cultured, because pesticides/herbicides used on the field are also effective in eliminating fungi.
